Three Pacific Newspaper Group staffers are among the nominees for the News Photographers Association of Canada’s 2011 National Pictures of the Year awards. Photographer Jason Payne has earned two nominations, one in the spot news category and one in the picture story category. An elderly woman died Tuesday after being hit by an SUV in downtown Vancouver. The 74-year-old was struck by a vehicle making a left turn from Robson Street on to Howe Street just before 3 p.m., Vancouver police Const. Lindsey Houghton said in a news release.

Restaurant and Food Services Association is warning the city of Vancouver to limit new food carts being added to Vancouver streets, or risk seeing those vendors struggle in a saturated market and cut into business at established fast-food restaurants. “We’re getting to the point now where it’s pretty much at the maximum,” association president Ian Tostenson said Tuesday.

One of the reasons Juan Carlos Barajas, his sister Alexa and their family moved to Canada from Mexico was for a better education. But that wasn’t a big concern Tuesday for Juan Carlos, 13, and 11-year-old Alexa as they made the trip from Langley on Tuesday with their mother Fleurette to Mount Seymour for some skiing.

Deadly criminal tattoos

These tattoos are from a new Canada Border Services handbook designed to help agents identify criminals and members of crime gangs. A version of the handbook was unofficially released on Feb. 28 by an advocacy group called “Public Intelligence.” Non-gang members wearing tattoos like these may put themselves at risk from gang members offended by others using their markers.
